Leak Be Gone! DIY Fixes for a Drippy Sink

The rhythmic drip, drip, drip of a leaky sink can be like nails on a chalkboard. But before you call in the home fix professionals, there are a few DIY solutions you can try to silence the culprit. At Bali Home Fix, we’re all about empowering Bali homeowners with the knowledge to tackle minor maintenance tasks. So, grab your toolbox and follow these steps to get your sink leak-free!

Diagnosing the Drip

The first step is detective work! Identify the source of the leak. Is it coming from the faucet base, the handles, the drainpipe connection, or somewhere else? Knowing the origin will help you determine the best fix.

Faucet Fix-It

  • Tighten the Packing Nut: A loose packing nut around the base of the faucet handle is a common culprit. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten it gently, but don’t over-do it or you risk damaging the nut.
  • Replace the Worn-out Washer: Over time, washers inside the faucet can wear out, causing leaks. If tightening the packing nut doesn’t solve the problem, you might need to replace the washer. Most hardware stores in Bali carry these inexpensive parts.

Drain Dance

  • Snug Up the Slip Nuts: The leak might be originating from the connection between the drainpipe and the sink. These connections are secured with slip nuts. Using an adjustable wrench, tighten them carefully to create a better seal. Be mindful not to over-tighten and crack the pipes.
  • Check the Drainpipe Gasket: The rubber gasket that seals the connection between the drainpipe and the sink can also deteriorate. If the slip nuts don’t solve the leak, replacing the gasket might be necessary.

Remember, safety first! If you’re unsure about any step of the DIY process, or if the leak seems complex, it’s always best to consult a professional plumber.
